Ever since I was a little girl I have loved earrings. I remember getting my first “dangly” earrings and strutting with pride in front of my best friend whose earrings weren’t quite as dangly as mine.
Over the years I have used different means of storing my earrings in an attempt to keep them tangle-free and organized.
Jewelry boxes just don’t seem to work for me. There are never enough spaces to keep the earrings individually. I would always wind up having three or four pairs all in the same cube.
I tried using a hanging pocket organizer in my closet {similar to the one in the picture}, but that just didn’t work for me either.
I finally found a great organizer that I could set on my dresser. It’s functional, looks nice and keeps the earrings together so nicely.
(I purchased mine at Claire’s. See it on Amazon here)
There was only one problem with it – it was a pain in the neck to try to put the plastic backs on my hook earrings.
Then, it dawned on me – if I just slid the earring back all the way to the front, they could hang nicely, stay organized, and I wouldn’t have to squeeze my hand down the center to try to get the back on.
Any earrings that have posts or hooks, I keep on the top so I can easily put the backs on. All the rest are stored on the lower tiers.

First of all I love your website and all the great tips & ideas. Thank you for the fabulous ideas!!
I was wondering if you could tell me where you found the earring stand. I love it!!
Thanks,
Loretta

Thanks, Loretta! I’m glad you like my site – and thanks for stopping by! I got mine last year at Claire’s in the mall. I put a link to Amazon on the picture of it if you don’t have a Claire’s nearby. Amazon has it for $19.99. I think it was around the same price at Claire’s, maybe a little cheaper. Hope that’s helpful!

I tried that! It was awesome until my sweet kitties discovered that they could now get those pretty dangly toys off the hangar 🙂
Ginny says
Oh, that’s a bummer! I guess you can tell I don’t have any sweet kitties in my house. 🙂

I love that idea! I have a fishing tackle box but I also have three or four pairs in each cube.

One pretty dangly earring organizer + five cats = disaster! lol
I have a standing jewelry armoir (how IS that spelled??) with several drawers. I found that the tiny ice cube trays fit perfectly in the drawers, and each “cube” holds one pair of earrings! They are too small to comfortably hold more than one pair, so I actually keep them all separated. Now I have exactly the same number of pairs of earrings as I do spots to hold them – so I follow the rule “one in, one out” – if only you knew how hard THAT is for me!
Thanks for your fun and useful ideas!

Wow! Five cats! That would be quite a temptation, I’m sure. Can you tell I have a dog, not cats? 🙂 Great idea to use the ice cube trays. I love that you put a limit on the number of earrings you have, too. A place for everything…right? You can’t put it away if there is no place for it. 🙂
Jo says
Oh, I didn’t mean to imply I have ONLY cats-i have 3 big dogs, too! Lol. One of my biggest organizing challenges is keeping everybody’s food and supplies neat and together! I’d love to see your thought on that!

WOW! You are really an animal lover, huh? 🙂 If you want to, you can e-mail me a picture of what you do now and I may be able to offer a suggestion or two. OrganizingHomelife (at) yahoo (dot) com. I keep our dog food in a trash can (purchased specifically for the dog food) with a flip-top lid. It’s easy for the kids to feed the dog and keeps my pantry clean and organized. I’m sure you have a huge bin for 3 large dogs! I keep all the supplies (nail clippers, grooming comb, doggie toothpaste, medication, coats, etc.) in a little box. Could you designate an area with two bins – one for “cats” and one for “dogs” to keep their supplies in? Or what about keeping each pets’ items in a shoe organizer? You could try an over-the-door style or a ClosetMaid one like this one.

I wish I could send you some pictures but it would be far too embarrassing! The problem is that I don’t have any system at all for pet supplies. Their stuff is all over the house. (like everything else we own) My jewelry is probably about the only thing in my house that’s organized! We have a small place and far too much stuff. You gave me some ideas to get me thinking, and I’ll keep checking your site in case you post other ideas in the future! Thanks!!

So simple that I’m thinking…why didn’t I think of that? Thanks for sharing!

Thats very pretty. I’ve been using those weekly pill organizer boxes. One pair per slot, and it has an individual lid. Works great, but its hard to see what’s in the box and its not as pretty as your idea. Thanks.

You know what we do in India sometimes? Hang them on the window screen! It not only looks nice, but it makes them easily accessible and visible. If you don’t have a window screen it’s a bit of a problem though. 😉 I guess you could make some kind of creative frame for a piece of screen though!
I hang my dangly ones on my mirror. I have the kind that’s wall-mounted so I just hang them on the top edge.

Several years ago, I built a simple frame, painted it black and stapled a window screen cut to size to the frame. I snuck into my daughters room and took all her earrings and put them on the screen, when she opened her Christmas gift, she was ecstatic about the earring organization which also held a few new earrings. As for myself, just recently, I had a lovely bowl on my dresser for organizing all my jewelery. I don’t wear alot of necklaces or rings, but i love earrings and they are a jumbled mess in the pretty bowl. So I went out to the dollar store and purchased a couple sets of ice cube trays, 4 trays in total and each tray holds 16. They are inexpensive and pefect for holding single sets of earrings. I love being able to easily find a pair in the mornings.

I’m going to have to get these! I have probably close to 200 pairs of earrings (my mother loved jewelry and I inherited all of hers). These will be great!

My grandmothers uses a board. that has holes in it. Kind of like a cork board. She also has a pocket organizer. My family loves accessories, and much like her shoes, I hope to one day own the volume of accessories they have. I still have enough to fit most in a jewelry box. I actually blog on organizing too, and my biggest challenge is coming up with a J blog (it is in alpha order). I have been considering jewelry, but I touched on jewelry in a previous blog. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts!
From one organizer to another!
