Welcome to Day 30 of my month long series “How to Organize Your Kitchen Frugally in 31 Days”. Every day during the month of October I will be sharing an organized space in my kitchen with you. My goal is to inspire you and give you ideas on how you can organize your kitchen.
If you missed it, you may want to read why I’m embracing my outdated kitchen. It might give you a little perspective on why the pictures of my kitchen organization won’t be “magazine worthy”, but helpful for real life organization.
If you’ve been following this series from the beginning, you may be wondering why the posts ended on the 29th day. Sometimes life just happens and you have to roll with it. Sickness set in and prevent me from getting the last two posts published on time. I hope you understand the delay and that you’ll still enjoy the last two posts. 🙂
Today I’m showing you how I organize recipes. One thing I really enjoy is trying new recipes. I get so inspired whenever I look at recipe boards on Pinterest or peruse the tantalizing pictures in my recipe books. Do you have stacks of recipe magazines, piles of printed recipes, or hoards of handwritten recipe cards?
There are so many ways to organize all those recipes, but one of my favorite ways is to keep a family recipe binder. What is in my binder? The recipes my family loves, the meals we eat frequently, and recipes we want to try.
If you have been following my blog, you’ve probably heard me talk about the Duo Binder in the past. If you are new here, I’m happy to introduce you to the Duo! It is a dual purpose binder: a 3-ring binder on one side and a 7-pocket accordion file on the other side. It is my FAVORITE binder to use for organizing recipes!
I work closely with the folks at Inoventions, and when I told them I was going to be sharing my recipe binder with you, they were happy to offer some Duo Binders (and a great bonus!) to YOU so you can make a recipe binder (or whatever other binder you wish) for your family!
I’m also giving away my new Recipe Binder Printable Kit for each winner of the giveaway!
Let’s look at how I organize my binder. These are the supplies I used:
- Duo Binder in turquoise
- Plastic page protectors
- Staedtler wet erase markers
- Avery style-edge tab dividers, 2 sets
I labeled the dividers:
- Breakfasts
- Lunches
- Dinners
- Recipes to Try (front of tab)/Entertaining (back of tab)
- Appetizers
- Breads
- Main Dishes
- Sides
- Vegetables
- Desserts
The front section of the binder is where I keep our favorite meal plans for breakfasts, lunches, or dinners. Why reinvent the wheel? If something works well, why not make it simple? It’s surprising how difficult it can be to make an entire meal that all six of us like. So if I make a meal that we all like, I definitely want to make it again!
I made a planning printable for Favorite Breakfasts, Favorite Lunches, and Favorite Dinners. I keep the printables in the front of each section accordingly. It makes meal planning simple! Behind the planning pages, I keep the recipes for an entire meal on a single page. I only print the whole thing out if I have time, so not all of our favorite meal plans have made it to the binder yet.
On the planning printable, there is a place to note the recipe source and the time it takes to prepare the meal. It’s a great reference and is easy to glance through when planning. If I haven’t had time to type up the recipes for a particular meal plan, I can still find the recipes since I noted the source on the printable.
Since I keep our family’s favorite meals in my binder, I put a copy of my Weekly Menu Planner in the very front. When I’m planning my weekly menu, I don’t need to constantly wrack my brain for meal ideas. I can easily flip to the section I need, check out our favorites, and plan our menu simply.
I keep my Quick Dinners printable on the left side of each page protector in the “Dinners” section. When we’re short on time or have a busy week, it’s easy to choose from meals we like that don’t take much time to prepare.
Now that we’ve covered what I keep in the front section of the binder, let’s look at the rest of it. As I said, I love looking at and trying new recipes. I print them from online recipe sites or food blogs, and of course find things I want to try in my cookbooks.
I made a Recipes to Try printable where I can jot down the recipe, where I found it, what category it’s in (main dish, veggie, etc.), and whether we liked it or not.
In the back sections of the binder divided by category, I keep recipes that I’ve made that we liked and are worth making again.
Some recipes I’ve printed from online sites:
Some, I’ve torn out of magazines:
Some are fantastic recipes that friends have copied for me. Each category has a printable section divider.
I also have a section for entertaining. I like to keep track of holiday meals and meals I’ve made for entertaining guests that were successful. Holiday meal planning can be stressful if not organized well. My holiday meal planning printable helps keep track of the many parts of our special meals and who is bringing (or making) each item on the menu.
So why is the Duo Binder perfect for a recipe binder? Because of the attached accordion file! In the picture below, you can see the tabs in the binder side. The top flap lifts up to reveal the accordion file.
This is where I keep take out menus in case we have a night where we don’t feel like cooking.
I labeled the remaining pockets with the same categories as I have in the binder. Whenever I find a recipe I want to try, I print it or tear it out of a magazine and store it in the pocket. When I feel like trying something new, it’s simple to choose a new recipe from the file. If we like it, I can put it in a page protector in the binder side. If we don’t like it – I toss it!

This is such an amazing idea. I wish that it was around when I was first married and starting a home. I had and still have a hard time getting and staying organized. I will get this for my girls to pass on the timely tips to their girls. Thank you so much for all of the effort that you have put into this. I love seeing the new things that you come up with. Keep up the excellent work!!
Ginny says
Thank you, Suz! xoxox
Michelle says
I love the way you used the Duo Binder here. I have not yet purchased any–mostly because I can’t figure out how many to buy. The Duo Binder is awesome because it has both the binder side and an accordion folder side. It will be a great way to keep all the things I have filed in the binder together with things that I have yet to file–like your recipes to try go in the accordion section until they are approved and can be put in the binder. I plan to purchase several–to use for recipes, like you have, and for my home management binder, as well as organizing coupons and, well, I haven’t figured out how many more uses these have. Love them. Thanks for reviewing them, otherwise I wouldn’t even know they exist.
Jennifer Casey says

Sara says
My daughter got me started on this. I love it. It has helped me reorganize a lot. Not only in my kitchen but the way I organize our home & our filing system. Thank You for your help.
Charisse says
First off, I think your recipe binder is one of the best put-together I’ve ever seen. I love that this binder gives ample room to keep everything you need together and separated at the same time. It works amazingly well for recipes, menus planning, and party planning. I also love the versatility I see with this binder. I could see my daughter turning this into an art binder for herself; I would love one to organize my paperwork (bills, important papers, taxes, etc); and it would also be great for couponing and homeschooling. The possibilities are endless!
Ginny says
Thanks, Charisse! 🙂

What I love about your binder is all things are in one binder. Currently I have a binder that has recipes, then one for take out menus. Plus I have recipes scattered that I have not yet place in my binder. This would eliminate the ones scattered and all would be in the same binder SO much easier to find! Thanks for your giveaway! Have a great day!

The Duo binder looks amazing – especially to use as a recipe binder. All the little bitty recipes that get clipped off of boxes or labels can’t get lost if they’re in the accordion file!
Sheryn Kelderhouse says
Love the two parts to the binder. Its an organizing fool’s dream come true!
Jenene Tucker says
I love that the Duo Binder has the accordion folder attached to put things in that you still need to put in the binder! That way, nothing gets misplaced while waiting to be added to the binder!
Kristin Orth says
I would love to be so organized, and this binder would really help! I love recipes, and could keep my unfiled ones in the expandable pockets.
Beverly says
The binder has a spot for everything I would need for menu planning!
Lacey B. says
This binder is genius. I have a dry-erase menu board for a week at a time but sometimes we have a hard time following it. Then I have a separate binder for recipes. This will help me keep recipes and meal planning all in one spot. Thanks for the helpful tips!!
melindayakich@bellsouth.net says
I love your pages! What a clever idea to have a binder and an accordian file in one.
Nancy Clark says
I take recipes from magazines to try, and they end up in a messy pile where they are totally forgotten. I have needed something like this all through my married years – all 38 of them. I know my husband would appreciate me getting that cabinet organized!
Kim says
I have never seen anything like this Duo!! I love that it is a 3-ring binder AND an accordion file. Brilliant. And I love how you’ve set this up. Perfect. I just ran across you on Pinterest. SO glad I did!! Thank you!!
Ginny says
I’m so glad you found me, too, Kim! Thanks for visiting. 🙂

I like that the binder has the accordion file attached. Makes it very mobile.
T Sinns says
I need the Duo Binder so I can have a central location to keep up with all the yummy recipes I find. I currently have them in about 20 different places it would be really helpful to be able to just flip to a section and pick one other than trying to remember where all 20 places are.
Rebecca F. says
What I like about the duo binder is that you can keep everything organized in one place whether it be something that needs to be in a binder or something that needs to be in a pocket. Plus, they’re really cute!
Melissa McMillan says
Your website has inspired me to get more organized. I am too grateful for all your ideas and how much detail you have put into your organization. We just moved from a house down sizing to an apartment and we need to get organized because of the lack of room. With the loss of my walking abilities organization is the key. It is just a bit hard to do by yourself when everyone else is at work or school but your ideas have given me the “get up and go” attitude. Thank you so much.
Denise Smock says
I love having the loose recipes attached to the binder
Holly Kimbley says
Love how versatile the duo is..with 9 people to feed, I need something to keep all my recipes in, I seem to have them all over the place

I would love the duo binder to organize my coupons!!! Love the big pockets! Awesome!
Sherri says
I have never heard of these binders but I love the fact that you can keep everything in one binder. I have so many binders I can’t keep up with them all. I am in the process of trying to organize them now. This would be a great way to do that!!!
Heather says
I love how you use the binder. I use both types and this would be perfect for me. I need to grab a couple for other things around the house.
Cindy Baker says
I love the idea of having files attached directly to the binder! This is GREAT!
Nicole Kendall says
I LOVE that the binder has an accordion style section and a binder section. My current recipe book only has slots for recipe cards, which fall out and there isn’t much versatility to it at all. Plus, there’s no where to put meal plans. This binder has everything you need and it’s NEAT, no papers falling out every time you reach for a recipe!!
Konae Putman says
I love how it all stays together I have several file folders of recipes and they fall out with this they would stay put!
Dottie says
I love the duobinder! I could use at least two, to be honest. I’d use one as a recipe keeper as you have, and one to keep all my son’s important papers in. It would be great to have something that can hold daily notes about behavior, meds, etc, plus all the papers and such that come in, all in one place.
Stacie says
I love that the recipes are organized into meal categories. So helpful!
Darla says
Everything is all together and organized in this binder, I love it!
Jill Brady says
I love this so clean and easy to keep everything in one spot!! I love that the recipes would be easier to see being a full page rather a recipe card!!! LOVE this!!!!
Christina says
I have 3 Duo binders and I use them everyday for our homeschool, household binder, and a holiday and hospitality binder. I love the combination binder and accordion file for recipes. This total my new project.
Ginny says
I’m glad to hear you love them as much as I do, Christina! I haven’t used it for our homeschool yet, but you’ve got me thinking! 🙂
angie says
I have 3 or more binders…love the way you consolidated it all!
Diane Miner says
The idea of the recipe binder look fantastic to me. I have diabetes and heart failure. I tire very easily and often do not cook despite the desire to do so. Recently, I have found several new recipes I want to try and know that when I am eating better I feel much better. This would help to organize better and follow a better routine and plan ahead and ultimately get healthier!
Thank you for your ideas, they are terrific.
Jennifer says
I currently have a system that I love except for one thing – Don’t have one central place to store everything! This binder would be an awesome addition to my meal planning strategy!
Angela says
I like the organization the binder provides.
Caroline says
I love this idea the Due Binder is perfect I am forever losing my want to try recipes either in the huge pile of other recipes or they end up in the garbage before I have had a chance to try them out.

I love the DuoBinder because it is so versatile. I can keep clipped recipes in the accordion file until I’m ready to use them when using it as a recipe binder. I love it as a memory book for my daughter’s first year of kindergarten. I keep standard size papers in the binder section, and little things I want to keep in the accordion file section.
ldgilray90@outlook.com says
Great idea & I love the duo binders!
My question is did you get special dividers that work with the page protectors? My dividers don’t show past the page protectors. Any help would be appreciated!
Ginny says
Oooh! You reminded me that I forgot to mention my solution for that in the post! Thank you – I’ll have to put an update. You can see how I “fixed” the dividers in this post: http://96.30.21.56/~organiz/archives/4758
ldgilray90@outlook.com says
Thank you, that is what I usually do, I thought maybe you had found somewhere to purchase them. I agree, I totally don’t understand why a company hasn’t come up with this yet.
I can’t wait to get my recipes and menu planning all organized!!

The duo binder looks like a great way to keep recipes I want to try and to keep the ones I have tried and would like to make again all in one place. Right now I have a file on the computer with lots of recipes that I want to try and also a folder of ones I want to try or have already tried. It’s not a very good system. Thanks for the great ideas you share.

Wow, I learned so much on here, what great ideas!
Debra Holbrook says
As a single mom of two girls, ages 10 and 3, organization is key! Not only do I attend an online university (working on my Bachelors) but I also go to tax preparation school so having a recipe binder is key when planning meals. It saves money at the grocery store and it helps you buy only what is needed when you do not have a very big pantry and refrigerator. I think this binder is amazing and I love everything you do on your site…it is truly inspiring!
Ginny says
Thank you Debra! xoxoxo
Mandy says
I love binder for the organization. I have TONS of recipes I want to try, and have cut out from magazines, newspapers but they are all slapped together…and I can never find the one “I know it’s in here somewhere”. 🙂
Hope says
I look forward to trying a duobinder because I think it would work amazing for both my recipes but also for my budgeting binder!!!
Jennifer Johnson says
I just love the organizational aspect of it all. I am a hot mess with my recipes and meal planning!!
Nancy says
I think the entire thing is the greatest idea ever. I haven’t seen anything like it. Just this morning I was talking to my hubster about organizing our kitchen and getting better with meal planning. Something the Lord has placed on my heart as of late. I have lots of great aspirations, but feel completely disorganized. I love how you keep the “favorite” meals in the front of the sections. We are a family of 6 also, and you are right…….finding something we all like is incredibly hard, so I’d love to have a reminder of the recipes everyone likes. 🙂 We have a REALLY small kitchen, so having something compact like that to help with organization appeals to me as well. I plan on sharing this idea with my friends. 🙂 Hubster calls me the “referral queen.” lol
Ginny says
Thanks Nancy! I appreciate you sharing it. 🙂
Nancy says
No, thank YOU. 🙂 I hadn’t heard of your blog before, so now I’ve been going through your past posts to get ideas…..lol God’s timing is perfect!
Ginny says
It ABSOLUTELY is!
andrea says

Tina says
Love multi purpose things…the Duo is great for recipes…or tax items or crafts …I’d need many with all I have to save! LOL
Cheri Thomas says
I love how this system turns the frazzled stack of recipes and turns them into a beautiful, easy to find system. Recipes are easy to locate instead of sifting through a stack of odd sized papers & pages. And I love how you mesh the binder with menu planning and take out menus/coupons – what a fabulous system!! I love it!
kimberly says
That accordion file combined with the binder is BRILLIANT!!!
Teri Triplett says
The binder would organize my mess of recipes so I could actually remember I have them and USE them!!!

Krista W. says
I bought a Duo Binder earlier this year to use as an organizational aid to my duties as Treasurer for my son’s home school co-op. I love that I can open either the binder or the acc. file alone, or at the same time, and things don’t fall out of either area. It is big enough for me to keep my deposit book, check cancelling stamp, receipts to file later, and much more, all without feeling cumbersome.
I also use the poly slip covers in the binder area to denote items that need to be dealt with (such as reimbursement checks to write), then file them in the file when they’re done. I can always see what needs done for that job. I keep a zippered pencil file in there as well with a calculator, pen, pencil and keys to our lockbox. It all fits and works!
Trina O'Neil says
