The other day on Facebook I asked if you liked organized closets. Obviously it was a rhetorical question because EVERYONE likes and wants organized closets, am I right?
Although organized closets are the stuff of my dreams, that was not reality in my girls’ room. We have a three bedroom house and four kids: 3 girls and a boy. That means all three of our girls share one bedroom.
I must say that although their room is a good size and their reach-in closet is fairly large, it has been a challenge getting and keeping it organized. With three girls (aged kindergartener to teen) we have a lot going on in their closet.
3 young girls + 1 outdated closet = organizational disaster
Now, I realize this photo might not spell disaster to some of you while others of you might be horrified. This picture was taken during the process of changing their winter clothes to summer. There aren’t as many clothes in there as there usually are, but I can assure you there are times when it looks much worse than this.
One of the ways I tried to create more usable space in this closet was to put a dresser in there for my youngest daughter. It worked out okay, but it made it very difficult to get to the things on either side of it. It was great for hide and seek, but not for making the most of the closet space.
The lower shelf frequently got disorganized because of the length of it. I have used multiple boxes and bins to help, but it’s always been a struggle. The top shelf was a place for things to get lost. 🙂 Actually, it’s where we kept small suitcases and sleeping bags for overnight trips or sleepovers. But, they were hard to reach and store neatly.
I like to keep boxes and bins for clothes they’ve outgrown as well as those that are ready for the next season. I took several of them out recently and just stacked some of the clothes. That didn’t work very well.
When we moved to this house I was 7 months pregnant with my youngest, so we never got to the little things like painting the insides of closets and replacing ugly contact-paper-covered-shelves.

When we moved into our foreclosed house, the previous owner left with the closet doors. With one shelf and one dowell in each closet and no way to hide the chaos in my 2 reach-in closets, I’m overwhelmed and now inspired by the work ahead of me. I’d love to win!
My mom is moving in with us for awhile and I could REALLY use a closet makeover. She is going to have to share an closet with my 9 year old daughter. I don’t think I would be able to stop at just one closet though – I would probably love it so much that I’d feel compelled to redo every closet in the house! I currently have gone from Caregiver to my Mother for 20 years to Caregiver to my husband. To have an organized closet for my clothing and my husband’s clothing as well as one for his medication and our supplies would be an absolute blessing.

We just moved into a 100 year old home. Closets back then weren’t made the way we dream of them now, that for sure. My husband and I really need to do something with the master closet but it falls behind a back yard and a basement remodel on our list of priorities….maybe this can be inspirational to us. My girls are now sharing a room—we’re expecting our first boy the end of June! We would love more “organized” space in their room. It’s been tough making everything fit. We’ve definitely de-cluttered, but it’s still a tight squeeze.

Closets are always either disappointing or amazing. I’ve had exactly one home in my life with amazing closets, and it’s not the one we live in now. This house is amazing to me in most ways, but the closets? Even though most of them are a decent size, they were designed with no love at all.
My daughter could definitely use help. An almost teenager is an organizational challenge.

This is just what is needed in our home! My daughter and two children moved into our unfinished basement a year and we’ve since been trying to finish up two bedrooms. We are at the point of painting, door hanging, baseboards and such. Lastly exactly this – closets !! This would be a God-send !!
